ReplyDeleteWhen statues of Siruvachur Madurakaliamman temples (two of them) were vandalised, there was a natural outpouring of anger. To this day, the police has not been able to figure out who did this and no one has been arrested. In fact, it appears that the Government and the Law & Order do not even seem to care about such an event. Just imagine what sort of pressure would have been piled on the Govt. if it were a worship place of another religion.
Karthik Gopinath was one of the persons who jumped up to collect money from the public to rebuild the statues. From what I could ask around and understand, some third rate, online hit jobs and a dodgy news item on News18 TN accused him of siphoning off the funds for his personal purpose. But it appears that all but one lakh of the funds collected are still with the Milaap site, and the one lakh has been released to the locals.
The grounds on which he has been now arrested is that he collected money using the name of a HR&CE temple, without getting prior permission from the HR&CE. This is a procedural nonsense which will be thrown out when the case goes to the High Court.
The questions to be asked are:
1. Did he swindle the money - I am now confident that this is not the case, but let the police prove otherwise.
2. Did he misuse the name of a HR&CE temple with the intention of swindling the money - is that even grounds for prosecution? What act in IPC give the Govt & HR&CE such wide ranging powers to prosecute a person? If I start an online campaign to collect money to spend on all the Vaishnava Divya Desam temples (105 in India and one in Nepal. Of the ones in India, 84 in Tamil Nadu, and a good chunk of them under HR&CE), could I be arrested? This is utterly ludicrous.
I am sure this was planned not for protecting HR&CE temples or even safeguarding public money, but to jail another BJP-friendly youngster and threatening those who have taken a hard stance against the DMK government. What goes around WILL come around.
Karthik will have spent a few days in jail, harassed and tired, but I hope his spirit remains strong and he comes out with full vigour to take on both political forces and anti-hindu forces head on.
